25 Mar

Sitting at my desk, I look out the window. Across the road there’s an old, sandy red building that climbs into the sky, but not so high that I can’t see the blue sky with white smoke clouds casually moving along. Light beams off parts of the building that face away from me, whilst the parts facing my direction stand solemnly in the shade. In my limited view, I can’t see where the light is coming from but I know that the sun is shining. Though I can’t feel its warmth, it is shining… somewhere. And I think…

Man... I can't wait for Summer!

‘…man, I can’t wait for Summer!’

What makes one season so much better than another that we wish our days away in anticipation of the time we leave the house without a jacket, and sit in the park laughing and eating ice-cream with friends who before now, we’d been too busy to see? When the days get longer and we do less but enjoy more. As if life would be more exciting when we’ve cast away the boredom and mundane tasks of today, so tomorrow we can play.

Why do I have to wait? Why do I have to be patient? Why do I feel like the best is yet to come? Why am I subject to the involuntary art of delaying gratification? Why does life feel like a Friday, the first day of the weekend, but we still have to endure 9 until 5 before we can be free? Why do I feel like all the things I want to do are an arm’s length away, but the window of ‘now’ holds me back? Why does Summer come in June? Why do Winters come too soon?

Why? Why? Why?

No matter how badly you want Summer to come, you have to wait for Autumn and Winter, then Spring to pass. Before you find that special person to love forever, you’ll have frogs to dismiss and flies to squat. Though you may be pregnant with wonderful ideas, it takes 9 months for a baby to be born. And 5pm will eventually come, but not before 4pm, 3pm or 2pm. Even 1pm will only last 60 seconds before another moment transpires.

There is a time for everything, and under heaven there is a season for every activity; which can only be learnt in such climate. If you don’t make it through the season, the season won’t end. When you’re conscious of time passing, it feels like the wait is longer. Life just moves slowly. So slowly, it just goes on and on and on and on and on and ON!! But when you focus on the beauty of the crispy leaves, the showers that cleanse and the warm feeling as snowflakes fall on your lashes and melt on your tongue, the season isn’t so bad.

Then before you know it, Summer is here. And the sun gets you all hot and bothered, those excited insects are constantly bugging, and everywhere outside is overcrowded and overpriced. And you sit there and think…

Man... I can't wait for Winter!

‘…man, I can’t wait for Winter!’

Eventually, you come to realise that there is no better, no better season. In every season, there is never nothing going on. There are no ordinary moments so I don’t want to wait for another season but begin to appreciate and enjoy being HERE… NOW… THIS MOMENT.

Finding Calmness in the Midst of Craziness,
